MUNICIPAL DAY LABOUR.
TO THB EDITOB OT THE PKES3. j Sir, —In the discussion at the Linwood Council's meeting on Thursday night, re day labour vermis contract work, the words "There was no surer way of making, a man a loafer than by putting him on a public job at day wages," were not used by me. What I did say was that tihere was a general impression tbait a man working for a public body was not expected to work the same as he would for a contractor, and it was quite evident that the Council was not getting the amount of, work "t ought, seeing that Moor Bros, were prepared to do the work at a lower price than-it wae costing the Council. Being a member of the. Works Committee, I have an opportunity of ascertaining the qualifkwtione of men employed, and I am pleased to say that many of tlie men in the Council's employ have proved themselves trustworthy and reliable servant*.—Yours, etc., W. H. SEED.
