MAGISTRATES' COURT RETURNS.
The Christchurch Magistrate's Court returns for last year show that 730 personj (660 male* and 130 females) were taken into custody charged with drunkenness, as against 980 persons (805 males and life! ffmales) in the preceding rear. The cyclists who preferred the footpath to the rb.id, and got into trouble thereby, reached a, total of 236, of whom 13 were females. Other items in conviction headings are: — Theft, 132; lunacy, 71, of whom 21 were females; false pretences, 18; forgery, 14; breaches of peace, 22; obscene acts, 26 ; obscene language, 12; no lawful means of support. 44. of whom 16 were female*; felling liquor after prohibited hours, 9; retrieded children, 25, including 3 females; failing to support, 56, of whom 2 were female.-.; disobedience of maintenance orcere, 60; prohibition orders, 89, of which 9 were issued in respect of females; furious driving, 13; ill-treating animal*, 30; breaches of Electoral Act. 4; and 2U cases of truancy, out- of whom 20 of the small offenders were girls.
