At the annual meeting of the. Ashburton Musical Union, held on Tuesday evening, Mr Snodgrass wan in the. chair, and there was a fair attendance of members. Tbe report stated that the Union included twenty-one honorary members and 100 working members. 'The Union began the year with a debt of £40. which hae been reduced to £5 16s, and thie amount was covered by outstanding subscriptions. The death of Mm Horace A. Gates, one of the most valuable members of the Union, ww referred to. The following officers were elected for the eneuing year:—President, Mr Or. A. M. Buckley; vice-presidents Messrs J. Snodgrass, D." Thomas, H. Friedlander, J. C. Jf. Grigs, T. E. Upton, nnd Dr. Trevor; committee, Merer* \V. Schwartz and F. Curtis, in addition to the officers of tihe Union; hon. oonductor of chonw, Mr J. Gillies: hon. conductor of orchestra, Mr H. A. Gates; lion, librarians, Mi«s B. Claridge (orchestra), Miw NicoJL (chorus); hon. treasurer, Mrs Dee; hon. wewtary, Mr E. RlancheskT. Votes of thanks * were passed to the conductor-", pianist, outgoing officers, and the chairman, and the meeting terminated. The annual meeting of the members of the Rangiora. Literary Institute wae heJd on Tuesday, Mr E. R. Good presiding. Tlie. statement of receipt* and expenditure for the year showed receipts £120 19s lid, expenditure £110 19b 10d, credit balance £10 0s Id. He etated that all outstanding liabilities would 'bo met by the money in band. The following were elected a Managing Committee for the vcar:—.Messrs T. Keir. R. Ball, J. O. Jones, J. O. Josling. L. Hunnibell. t. W. Ambrase, F. A. McLean, P. Keir, E. R.. Good. C. I. Jennings, S. Ayere, A. H. King, T. R~ Cresswell, and J. Carmichael. Mr E. R. Good was re-elected president, Mr C. I. Jennings secretary, and Mr J. B. Wilson auditor; Book Purchasing Committee, Messrs R Ball, T. R. Cresswell, J. O. Jones, th-> preeident and secretary. It was decided to increase the librarian's salary to £30 per annum.
