SYMPATHY FROM THE CITY COUNCIL.

Reference was made to the death of the Hon. W. Rolleston at the City Council's meeting on Monday evening. The counsillors had taken their seats, and before the minutes were read, the Mayor, Mr H. F. Wigram, said:—"Before we deal with anything on the order paper this evening, I have a motion to submit. It is—"That this Council desires to express its sense of the deep loss Canterbury and New Zealand have sustained by the death of the Hen. William Rolleston, and tenders to Mrs Rolleston and family its sincere sympathy in their bereavement.' It is quite unnecessary for mo to refer to the character and career of Mr Rolleston, they are well known to you all. He standshigh in the esteem and respect of members of all sides of politics. As a man he was fortunate in being able to gain the affection of all with whom he came in contact. He was one of the Superintendents of this province ; be laid many of our foundation stones, and laid them deeply and truly." Councillor J. T. Smith seconded the motion, which was carried, all councillors standing. A memorial service will be held in the Cathedral on Sunday at 11 a.m.
