It is feared that the disaster in the Friendly Islands is wonse than tiial in the Society Islands. Eight hundred deaths occurred in Haokikuera and Marakau alone, and eight whites were drowned. Only those who climbed tall trees escaped. The French are provieioning Tuamotu and other islands. A cable message from San Francisco, published yesterday, stated:—"A Reuter'e message from San Francisco states that the Mariposa brings news »that a tidal wave and hurricane devastated the Society Islands on January 13th, killing a thousand natives. ,.
