Mr Rolleston. At last night's meeting of the Timaru Borough Council several councillors paid a gratifying tribute to the memory o* the Hon. W. Rolleston. The Mayor, Mr Crnigie, said he had known and always heard of the honourable gentleman as a etraightforw'ard man and good colonist — one who had done much for the cause of education, and one to whom New Zealand owed much for its liberal land laws, and when the history of New Zealand was written Mr Rolkston's name would have a prominent position. Cr. ■Mills said' he always found the deceased statesman a thorough gentleman in word and deed, and Cγ. Rothwell added that, though opposed to the present Government, Mr Rolleston was ever anxious to promote the well-being of the colony. Canterbury had much to thank him-for, and his name should ever be kept green. A resolution was carried— "That this council legrets the demise of the Hon. W. 'Rolleston, and tenders its condolence with h» widow and family." The motion was carried in silence, all the councillors standing.
