SCARLET FEVER IN DUNEDIN
BREACH OF THE HEALTH ACT.
(SPECIAL TO "THE PBESS.") DUNd-DIN, February 6. boys from the • Industrial' School were token into the hospital to-day, suffering with fever. At the Police Court this afternoon, before Mr Carew, S.M., John Stanton was charged that on the 28th January, whilst suffering from an infectious disease, namely, fever, lie wilfully exposed himself in an inn—to wit, Heffernan's Hotel, South Dunedin. A second information charged the accused with a similar offence at the Gladstone Hotel. Afpr hearing the evidence, Mr Oarew eaid:—-"I cannot take a-lenient view of the case. His action was "wicked and cruel, and reckless and selfish, but in fixing a penalty I must take into consideration his means. He is only a farm labourer, and I shall take that into account. I must, however, inflict a substantial penalty. He will be fined 20* in each case, with costs £3." Mr Fraser, Crown. Prosecutor, said he was glad to hear his Worship's retharka. A public caution was necessary. Only yesterday three children, freshly recovered from scarlet fever, were sent to the St. Clair baths to bathe, and two of them vrtn. into the water. His Worship remarked that it was no
use treating such cases as the present one lightly, if the efforts of the H«-lt_i Department to preserve health were to be of any avail.
