The docking charges were considerably reduced in 1884. New by-laws were made by the Board on the Ist August, 1888. The provisions of the latter were such as to relieve the Board of responsibility in. docking vessels, and also enabled the Board to dispense with the services of the assistant dock/ master, at £200 a year, a.rtd also half that of the- superintending engineer, amounting to £125 ft year. An engine driver, at £162 a year, now represents the permanent staff at the graving dock. On the 15th September, 1891,- the Graving Dock charpen wore further reduced, whereby vessels of 1201 tons and upwards are docked for four days for £50, instead of £75 as formerly. * The Graving Dock and machinery cost £105,000. Interest and sinking fund on that sum, at 6} per cent, amounts to £6825 per annum.
