The surplus of pilotage receipts more than covers the above deficiency on the towage service. The tug also undertakes the work of shifting vessels from one wharf to another, for which ntr- towage charge is made when it is done to facilitate the general working of the port. New boilers were put into thp tug in September, 1685, at a cost of £1545. .Special repairs end renewals were effected on these boilers in September, 1895, and subsequently contracts were entered into with Mr John Anderson for new boilers, decks, sponsons, paddle-wheels, machinery, etc., to bo completed by 14th September, 1901. The cost of the whole of the work connected with the new boilers and renewals, etc., amounted to £5736 17s 6d. The value of the steam tug Lytteltoa now stands in the Board's books at £6337. She originally cost £13,000. The. insurance premiums paid on the tug Lyttelton up to March, 1894. amounted to £5539 15s 10d, when the Board became their own insurers.
