OBITUARY.

MR W. H. LANE. The many friende of Mr W. H. Lea* will regret to learn that be died suddenly on Tuesday. Although Mr Lane had been iU for three weeks, fehe result of a severe dud caught on the bowling grwn, he was making good progress towards recovery when death occurred suddenly from heart failure. Mr Lane was the third eon of the late Mr William Lane, J. P., of Orton Park. Batlmrst, New South Wales, and was born at Bathurst in 1828. He followed pastoral pursuits in connection with his father's estate in New South Wales, and held a commission us Justice of the Peace ucder Governor Fitzroy for the whole territory of Australia. In 1863 he removed with his family t-o Chrastchurch, having previous}purchased th? City Mills from tlte late Mr Inwood. Mr Lane was a member of the Ohristchureh City Council in its early days, and a director, and for some time chairman, of the Christchurch Gas Company. Hβ was on the Board of the first Investment and Loan Association from its commencement until its expiration, and heW «v similar position in the present Permaaent Investment Association. He whs also one of the ffrst directors of the Christchun» ,r Presa'' Company, and ecmctime Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, a life miunber of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and a director Of tb* Christohuich Tramway Company. For many years after he came to Christchurch ho took a teen interest in Church work, and was a member of Synod, and on the Standing Committee. Ho was largely instrumental in promoting the building of the churches at Mtrivale and Sumner. Hβ married, in 1852, a daughUx of Mr Lancelot lixxlale, of Sydney, and on December 11th, 1902, celebrated his golden "wedding, in the midst of n, large gathering of children and grandchildren. The funeral wifl. leave his late residence, Kilrea, FendaJton, at 2.15 p.m. to-day, for the Papomri Churchymrd.
