HARVEST FESTIVAL.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Harvest Festival Committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Commvttee was held yesterday, when Dr. Levinge presided. Mr Hay reported that he had -written to tie Peninsula- aid pome valuable aseistance would be obtained from that district. The President. said that with Mr Murphy he had visiUd Ashbutton. and met the Association there. The meeticg w most enthusiastic, and promised to tio all they could. The only drawback was that they would not be able to *«nd whe.it. H? had. however, pointed out tha*- other produce could be «Mit, iir.d prob.nbly they would appoint collectors of produce in the different parts of the A«*ht>urton County. He had promised that the freight would be paid by the Association. The meeting al*o discussed the question of having excursion trains on the d.iy of the fete. Mr Murphy said he had endeavoured to impress upon the members of the Association that tJie Canterbury Society was the parent Association, and that some £25,000 had been distributed in prizes throughout the country. Waen the member* understood this" they took the- matter up very heartily. TheVesult wouid be that the AsiiburtonCounty would bo wtll represented. The President said that he intended forwarding a copy of Uki report of the meeting of -the Ashbuilon Association to the other Associations. He hoped to receive reports from the. various country districts shortly. In reply to Mr Montgomery, The President said that there would be .1 prize for Associations. A number of mvuibars of the Association were added to the Committee, and it Mas resolved that the General Committee should be divided into sub-commit tecs. . The question of giving priae certificates in addition to the prize money for the bewt arranged stals waa considered, and it- was rew.ved that the suggestion l>e carried into effect. Tho President reported that he had been in communication with tho volunteer authorities regarding the attendance of the, Volunteers, but, had recedv-e'd no definite answers yH. It. had occurred to> him t h.it a display by the School Cadets would be an attractive item. It was arranged thai the President should see Major Loveda.y on the subject.. Tho Committee also rvsolved to request tha Ground Committee to sco Mr Patrick Campbell and Mr Macpherson, the president of the Caledonian Society and the chief of tho Scottish Society, to nee if it were possible to arrange for a couple of dancing teams with pipers on tho evening of the Festival.
