Tanner, M.H.R.'s, waited on the Board with inference to some College reserve* , . Sir William Steward said that he had approached the Board regarding two Colk'jje reserves in his district comprising pome 220 acres, which the Board proposed to 'let on U?ase for fourteen years from May. 1905. There was a targe demand in the neighbourhood for sma'.l holdings, and the Government had no land in that locality, and the jveople of the district ■were anxious that, these Trserves should ba cut up for wn.tll holdings. That morning there had bk?en a meeting of Canterbury members to discuss Canterbury subjects. He had submitted the mul ter to the meeting, and the result was that he and his two colleagues had bc.?n chosen to put the position before tin Board, and to ascertain whether the Board could sea its way 'to meet the wishes of the put/ie without any detriment to the Board. H-; apprehended that the Board would obtain increased rentals from the land by letting it in nnal'.er holdings than in the larger area?. Hβ suggested that tho Board should inquire into the matter. Mr Tanner said that the matter had met with the warm approval of tho Canterbury members. In reply to questions, Sir William Steward stated that he would su.gge.st the holdings should not bo less than five nov more than ten ara«s. The tenants would probably live or. the land, and would erect their own dwellings. After the. deputation hnd kft, the Chairman moved that tho calling of tenders be withdrawn until a report had been obtained from the College officers. This w;is seconded, and carried. A further motion, moved by Mr H. .!• Beswick, tha-t the matter be referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and report, was carried. The Chairman reported that the resignation of Dr. Dendy had been accepted, and fie had boen instructed to offer Dr. Cliilton a temporary appointment. Dr. Chilton, however, did not care to accept anything but a permanent appointment. The Board went into Committee to consider the matter, and on resuming the Chairman reported that Dr. Cliilton had been appointed Professor of Biology and PaJteontology. The Board then went into Committee to consider the question of the appointment of a lecturer in geology, and the Chairman reported that the Board had decided to advertise for a lecturer in geology at a salary of £100 per annum. The College Committee, in their report, recommended that permission be granted for the continuation of the scripture clasce at the Girls' High School on the same basis as heretofore; the classes to be held before morning school hours; attendance to be voluntary; consent of parents to be obtained, and the instruction to be strictly unsectarinn. The Committee reported that Dr. Dendy's resignation of the Professorship of Biology had been accepted as from the 31«t January, 1903. The Committee also recommended the Board that the following exhibitions be awarded at the Boys' High. School:—Special entrance exhibitions to I*. V. Norman and C. A. Stubbs; entrance exhibitions to A. H. Denne and L. H. Pareon; foundation exhibition to L. Collett. Also that P. Quartermain be allowed to retain his Governors' exhibition for the third year.
