BOROUGH COUNCILS.
ASHBURTON. lhe Ashburton Borough Council met on Monday evening. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), and Cis. Aloorn, Andrews. Jones, Davis, - Willis. Timmins, Reid, Clark, and Davison. The Mayor reported that the debit balance at the bank was £2006 8s 9d, and the sum of £31 5s 2d had been received! from all sources since lust meeting. The report, of the conference of delegates to fix the weekly halfholiday was read, at which it was decided that the holiday should be observed on Thursday as formerly. The conference also passed a resolution, a copy of which wns forwarded to the Premier, expressing the opinion that the Government should fix one day in the week, on which day the weekly half-holiday should be universally observed throughout the colony. The Lighting Committee's report wae read. The last clause in the report contained a recommendation to the Council to consider and place on the estimates for the ensuing year an amount for the purpose of obtaining an expert's opinion on a higih pressure water supply, and also for a scheme for lighting "the borough "with electricity. The report was adopted. On the casting vote of the Mayor it was decided to tu»k the Justice. Department on what terms they would exchange the Courthouse site for another suitable one. Accounts to the amount of £60 16a 10d were passed for payment. The Council then dealt with Domain Board business. The application by the Christchurch grocers for the use of the Domain for picnic- purposes waa granted.
