"CHARACTERISTIC OF NEW ZEALAND."

Mr Edward Filliter, the well-known consulting engineer of Hampstead, North-west London, writes to a resident of Wanganui: —" Attracted by the title ' Christmas Number of the Ohristchurch ' Weekly Press,' I have opened the roll that contained it, and am delighted and surprised at the- beauty of its illustrations, and must send you a line to say <*o. I have not (owing to my illness) seen any of the London Christmas illustrated papers (but I feel sure that this from New Zealand will very favourably compare with the best of them; while in th<j novelty and interest of the eubjecte illustrated, this from New Zealand must far surpass them. . . . The scenes depicted are peculiarly beautiful, and no doubt characteristic of New Zealand." — Mr W. S. Maiaquin, of Christchurch, has been kind enough to offer us evidence that "New Zealand Illustrated" is highly appreciated in France, bifl mother, Madame Maiaquin, writing from La Borde, Orleans, having by the last mail acknowledged a copy in flattering terms, saying "it has wonderfully beautiful views." Praise from France, Mr Maiaquin pointe wt, has a special value when the object considered hi one of art, and the French standard of pictorial engraving ie admittedly of the highest.
