BREACHES OF THE LICENSING ACT.

DUNEDIN, January 29. At Ba-klut'ba to-day John Gibbons MacDonnell, charged with unlawfully selling alcobolio liquor, was tfatenoed to threa months' imprisonment, the liquor found' to be confiscated. Defendant gave evidence on his own behalf. He •said, the liquor ■had 'been given ifoiSn by his mother-in-law. He admitted 'having bern previously fined £40, and on another charge of being sent to gaol for ten days. Hanlon, who appeared for the accused, a«ked that hi* objection ibe noted, that evidence as to prtvions convictions had* been improperly admitted.
At Bak-hrtlia, Alexander Cowie, brewer at Caverfihaim, wae charged with sending a baiirel of beer to Owa.ka without 'having on it distinctly written or printed a statement that it contained , liquor. Mr Oruickshanks, 8.M., wds at first inclined to agree with counsel tlhfct storage duty was sufficient, but after consideration decided that, its 'the defendant evidently thought he was acting in accordance with the regulation*, to dismiss tihe ca.se.
