CANTERBURY TEAM AT PRACTICE.

Owing to the inclement weather, tlic lornl tfam have not had regular practice this week. The players have, however, now settled down to earnest practice, ?.nd I fv-ery endeavour is b?iii<j made by them , jto b> in best form against the all-conquer-ing Englishmen. Considerable int«rt*t, too. i> being taken by the public, and'the pJav of the various players is keertiy watclied and criticised. Besides the ordinary net practice, niosr members are indulging in iieicling -practice, and rhe reputation that they have gained thv3 secuion ii> thie department should be well maintained. Ths following notes are contributed by an observer:— Boxshall is hitting freely, and, in addition to Ills strong leg play, ho ie cutting in good style, but hie defence ia weak. Frankish lias made a sudden recovery, and us batting at his best, driving in *p'endid fltyle, but his cutting is weak. On tlia damp, soft wicket, hits bowling lacks sting. Orchard ha* been showing poorer defence than usual, but is very eevero on louse bowling. iiallaway ix doing wry light work, as he has not- quite recovered from his recent-a-.-cident. 1). Keese is very much at home on the wickets, and in bowling splendidly; driving well, he na*> improved in his cutting, bur is still inclined to snick into the slips. .Siuifi has not reached his best form yet, as hie derence is not so sound as usual" T. W. Keese seems to have lost hit* late cut, but otherwise his play all round is jjiucfi improved, especially on lee side anrt on the off. Pearce is now batting like the Pearce of tild, with dogged defence and powerful driving, but his bowling w ft long way below hia best. Garrard has the strongest defence of the team at present, but his play lacks vigour except for an occasional drive. Strange needs to watch the ball more, a* hie defence just now is very weak. Ho is a better bowler than generally believed. Lawrence ie batting nicely, but business at present prevents him from putting in solid practice.
