CAPETOWN, January 29

Mr Chamberlain replied unfavourably to the ■Mafrkiirg Annexation Committee's request foir t'bo annexation of British Beohuanalaiid to the Transvaal. He complimented the •defenders on their glorious defence of the town, wihioh, he declared, had been such as no other nation could have accomplished. Ho disclaimed any intention of coaxing the Boers by flattering words. Hβ would be glad of their friendship, but the British were able to hoid the country without their help. These words deeply impressed the burghers, who loudly cheered.
