DUNEDIN, January 27. Mr John Alexander Ewen, of Sargood* Son and Ewen, was bora oir the 270» November of either 1826 or 1827 «t Lawrence Kirk, Kincardineshire. Hβ landed in Melbourne in October, 1852, and etarted at once in business with F. J. Sargood, father of Sir W. Sargood. Shortly after h» was made Victorian representative of ti» firm, travelling the country district*. Bβ waa admitted as partner in 1863, and cam* to Otago about the same time. Arriving in Dunedin lie practically founded the firm* branch litre, and remained in Dunedin for six or seven years; then went Home to England, where he took charge of ta# London interests of the firm. Hie home was at Potter's Bar, fourteen or fifteen, milee from' London, county Middlesex, and presumably it waa thtre that he died. He was a Justice of the Peace for the county, of Middlesex. Mr Ewen kaves two ione and two daughters.

Flags at the business houses in Dunedi* were hoisted at half-mast this afternoon en the news becoming known.
