GREATER CHRISTCHURCH

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS

Sir,—The Mayor, I notice, is very jubilant over the result of tb.<* T oU > and well he may be, and I congratulate him on the result of his enthusiasm in the cause. I have now a suggestion U> offer to hk Worship and the Councillor.!. There is a well known trait in the oh.iracter ff John Bull, and it is, that there is nothing like roast beef and plum pudding, washed down by wholesome libations, tor cementinn'friendly feelings and celebrating public 'events. * I wouid suggest, therefore, that the Mayor. Councillor, and citizens of Christchurcli should invite tne Mavore and Councillors of Sydenham, Linwood, and St. Albane to a banquet. J do not mean rhat the dinner should be at the expense of the Mayor and Councillors nor of the ratepayers, but that it should be by tickets, say, at 10s 6d each. Ihe extra expense for the guests might be defrayed by subscriptions, and I shall be p leased to send you my cheque for £2 &> towards the fund". I believe such a festal meeting would have the most beneficiai effect, and would bring about a more perfect understanding of what the future wouM be of a "Greater Christchurch." I offer my suggestion, therefore, to his Worship and Councillors of this city.—Yours, etc., JOHN BULL.
