A SPERM WHALE ASHORE

H Since I last wrc-te the weather has been very changeable, and has interfered oonsi&rably with shearing, but feed is very plentiful, and lambs are looking well. On the 16th December a large sperm whale came, en shore at Te Ngaio. Mesars Santos and Rynault have tried it out, and have secured 1200 gallons of oil, including 120 gallons of spermaceti, and in addition about .sQib of ambergris, wfcich is said to be worth about £2 10s sin ounce. I hear they are going to give a ball to celebrate the evect. The races came off on the 23rd, and we were fortunate enough to have a fine day. Mr Panira-u woa the Hurdles, Mr James Seymour the Chatham IsJand Cup, and Mr Charles Wdshart the Maiden Plate and Ladies' Parse.
