SPEECHES BY "MEMBERS. j Before the Returning Officer i«ad out the results of tiie voting for members ot the Boaard, the fact that Messrs Beeoe, Wignua, Stead, and Be&ven iv&A been elected for the Chrietchurcfi-Sydwi-liam-St. Albane sxb-diatrict had become knouii to the crowd outside tho Provincial Council Ohacnbers, and the Mayor oi Christfhwch (Mr Henry F. Wigram) briefly iuidressed the gathering. His Worship, in stating the result; congratulated the voter* of the eub-di»triob xa having put a fimt-claw man at tiro top ot the poll—Mr Reeee. In that gentleman* absence, and in the absence of Messrs Stead and Beaven, he tbutked the voters on behalf of the candidates elected, and «- preaecd the opinion that t-he memben elected would do all in their power to promote the interests of their conetitaents. (Applause.) Mr lieeoe, at that juncture, made bis appearance, and there were call* for a speech from him. Hβ wa* just beginning u> epeak, when the Returning Officer appeared and made the announcement of. the results. When the names of the successful candidates were mentioned, they were greeted with applause. The Returning Officer, after he had given the figures, caid he did not declare any of those polling the highest number of votes ejected, as the rolls bo compared the next day. The official de. olaration of the poll wuei* be advertised sn the newspapers. MR W. REEUE'S SPEECH. After the announcement of the results Mr Recce was again called upon for a speech. He thanked them most heartily foir having placed him in the position ha occupied on the poll. He had tilled many positions in the city, and had on every occasion received a great amount of support, not only from those immediately associated witih him, but by the citiaen.* generally. This iresh occasion upon which they had shown their confidence on him gave him very great gratification Indeed. They bad taken the first step in an important matter oonnected with the progress of the city, and he was pleased fhat they had decided not to lag behind Wei lington, Auckland and Dunedin. With the accomplishment of Greater Christ church, which, if not quite accomplished at the present, was wrthui measurable distance, Chratchurch instead of being a third or fourth-rate city, would become the leading city in Nerar Zealand. It did not require a prophet to tell them that because they had such a magnificent country behind them t>h*t it was a plain fact that etared them in the face. If they (supported the Board they bad elected and loyally accepted the proposals it would place before tJiem, then he wee quite sura that tfoe Board wouH do its beet for them, end the tramway system would ba a. iuooess.
