RIFLE ASSOCIATION'S MEETING.
DEPUTATION TO THE tREMIEK.
(n.E3S ASSOCIATION TKLZOBAM.) WELLINGTON, Jajiuary 21. A deputation waited on the Premier tonight to again complain of the manner in which the Defence Force Rifle Association's programme for the annual ehooting contest had been drawn up, and also of the quality of the weapons eupplied. The deputation represented the Rifle Oiubs oi the district. It was pointed out that the members of the Rifle Clubs were debarred from competing in many of the events on th» programme. Out of a prize list of £992, the sum ot £779 wae reserved for volunteers. Jlr SJeddon, in reply, deprecated the belief t£at the Defence Department wished to discourage Rifle Clubs; on the contrary, they"desired to give them every reasonable encouragement. At the same time the Government regarded the volunteer movement ac oj paramount importance. The sole reason for the Government taking over the Ritie Association meetings was to encourage voltmteering. He promised to consider certain details of the programme for the coming meeting. }
