MATCH AGAINST WAIRARATA.

Magnificent weather was again experienced for the second day's cricket matcti —Wairarapa, versus Lord Hawke s team. Play was resumed at 11 a.m., when Dow son and Leatham (whose respective, total* were 52 and 5), again went to the wickets. J_SD alter play co___<?_ced Dowson sent an easy catch, which was missed, and a few minute- later gave another opportunity to the fieldsman which was not accepted. Two hundred appeared on the board, ami at 208 Leatham was given a "life." Sereral changes of bowling were tried, but proved fruitless, and the pair continued to rattle on the score for half an hour. Leatham again gave a ciianoe, which Bailie a*-' oeptod. and the total _bood—244—7—_-• Fane partnered Dowson, whose individual score was 87. Tlie latter played with confidence, and, together with Fane, soon increase- the score till the third century was reached. Shortly afterwards Dowson gave a third "life" through the inability of Swan to accept an easy catch. The local bowlers were put to the test, every available one being tried, but Dowson and Fane defied all, and continued to rapidly increase the total, banging the balls in ail directions. When 350 appeared Don-son to dealing severely with trie bowling. In two consecutive overs lie scored 16 and 22 respectively. It was apparent now that no separation could be elfect-d, and the field settled down to chase the ball. Run after run was added. Th" bowling was changed and re-changed, but without result, both playing brilliant cricket. Dowson during his innings gave no less than six openings to take his wicket, but they were not taken advantage of. As showing how the bowling wae mastered, Dowson hit 13 off three consecutive ball-. The approach of the luncheon adjournment saw the fourth hundred on the board, and live more were added when the adjournment was made. The Engliß-i- p - declared the innings closed with a lead ot 200 over Wairarapa _ first essay. Leatham made 26, Fane (not out) 26, and Dowson (not out) 218. Dowson- score included (seventeen 4's, one 3, live s's, six 6s, six 2'e and the rest singles. He was at the wickets an hour and forty minutes, scoring 166. Resuming after luncheon, Baillie and Hargreave opened to Judd. The partnership realised 6, when Judd was cleverly stumped. Cargill replaced him, a_d had only knocked' up a single when Baillie.was dismissed, being caught in the slips. 7— 2—3. Swan, the successful batsman in th* previous innings, tilled the vacancy, but retired after playing three, balk leg before -wicket. 7—3—o. Cobcroft, the next man, was oaugnt in the slips in the first ball. 7— H —o. Logan came next, and was soon bowled. 7—s—l. Perry replaced Cargill, and carried the score to 12, when he was given out l.b.w. Ma-dsen, the top scorer in the first innings, was associated. with Perry, but hopee of a repetition "f his performance were soon dissipated, as after obtaining a couple of byes he sent one to Bosanquet, who held it. 14—7—0. A stand was made on H. Hawke joining Perry, the score going up to 27, when, the latter -gave Warner an opportunity, which was- accepted. 27—8—14. Laurenson played two for nil, and was caught in the next over. 27—9—0. RenaJl scored 2, and was then caught by Whatman. Ticehurst did likewise. Beechy repeated the performance of the two previous strikers, and the board read 34 for twelve wickets. F. Hawke and Ogier were disposed of for the addition of one to the total, and H. Mad-en, Gundy, and Gaiway took the total to 43. When 54 was recorded sixteen wickets were down. One more was added by the next wicket, and eighteen were down for 58. At four o'clock the partners-ip •between NicholLs and Feast, which produced 25, came to a termination, Feast being caught by Bosanquet. Keys joined Nicholls, and radsed the score to 104. Frith played careful crkliel until 119 runs were made, when Bosanquet caught hint in the slips. The Wairarapa team was beaten by an innings and 91 runs. The following was the bowling analysis: —Englishmen—Hargreave, _ix for 25 ; Thompson, eight for 27; Burnup. thsre for 33; Dowson, one for five; Bosanquet, two for nineteen. Wairarapa—Oar-gill, none for 46 j Keys, one for 47; Frith, one for 37; J _d_, one for 75; Ticehurst, none for 30; Cobcroft, one for 55; Hawke, one for 57; Logan, none for 18; Beechev, none for 24.
The visitors left for Wellington this evening.
