MATCH AGAIXST WAIRARAPA. (FKESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) J GRKYTOWN, January 20. Capital weather prevailed throughout the whole day for the cricket match. The attendance was estimated at a thousand. The wicket was not playinjr well in tlie morning, but improved considerably as play prosressed. Contrary to expectations, the Ittcal twenty-two mad« a brilliant stand, •especially the tail end. Play was commenced at. 11.30 a.m., and continued till half-past six. Thompson and Hargreave opened the bowling to Cobcroft a-n&Baillie, but- the partnership was not productive of a great, stand, I Baiilie being bowled in the third over beI fore he scored. Cargiil filled the vacancy, and raised the score to 20, "eci&n Cobcroft played one on to the wicket, his quota being eight. Judd joined Cargill, apfci some good cricket was witnessed. When the total was 28, Cargill was given out ibw, his score of 16 including one four. H. Havrke followed on with Judd. The partnership produced a few more runs, but tlie farmer player was caught by Warner when his score stood at six. H. Madson t!id not. last long, only managing to break his "duck," when he was dismissed, being caught by Bosanquet-. Judd was playing careful cricket, and a lengthy partnership with Perry resulted, the score being earned to 60 before Perry retired caught by Leatliam. Then came the disastrous retirement of Ba-ehey (1), Laurenson (1), Ogier (3), F. Hawke"(o), Galway (3), Tuinehiirst (3), and Keys (11. When* Judd liad made 26 he was caught by Bosanquet. Logan and Cundy hit out vigorously, and soon knocked up 17 before the union was interfered with by Hargieave, Logan retiring with 10 to his credit. Frith joined Ctaidy, but- was run out. Sloan came to i the rescue, but Ctydy, after contributing r saven, was given out Ibw. Nicholls kept his wicket up while Swan saw 10 ti> his ci«dit, but tfre former's life was short, and he was caught by Bosanquet whtn the totui stocd at 118. R-enall joined Swan, and the two gave a fine exhibition of slogging, and were not separated before 142 was on the board. IV. Madson replaced Rsnall, and the field were given some racing about, tho Utter hitting out with great confidence and vigour. • His score was 44 bvfore he was caught by Stunning. Swan carried his bat for 19. The total of the first innings concluding for 205. Hargreave touk twelve for 51, Thompson four for 55, Bosanquet ons for 21, and Burnup three for 56. The Englishmen commenced their innings at four o"clock, Warner and Whatman going to the wicKfct first. The home team fielded .eighteen men. The two batsmen dealt severely with tlie home bowling. In the fourth over Ogier mulled- a ball when he should easily have stumped Warner. The score was carried to 64, when Whatman was dismissed Ibw. His effort produced 46. Williams took his place, but was retired when the score was 67. Burnup had a fairly long life, carrying the total to 97, when Warner was run out. His effort was responsible for 24. Dowson was next in. Frith accepted a, catch from Burnup when the score was 122. Very slow cricket was now witnessed until the day's play ceaeed. Stunning filled tlie vacancy, and 171 appeared on the board. Bosanqu<st came next, and knocked up two when he was run out. Leatham joined Dowson, end these two were both in when stumps were drawn for the day. Scores: —Warner 24, Whatman 46, Burnup 34, Stanning 14, Bosanquet 2, Dowson (not out) 52, Leatham 3. Extras 9. Total, 185 for six wickets.
