NOTES AND MEMORANDA.
The matron of the Christchurch Hospital' desires to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of magazines from Mrs Beals and Mi«B Thornhill, and old linen from Mra A. W. Bennett. A public meeting convened' by the Mayor of all interested for or against the amalgamation of Christchurch with the surrounding boroughs will be held in the Canterbury Hall on Tuesday next, at 8 p.m. The Fire Brigiade Competitions will start to-day at Lancaster Park at noon. An attractive programme has, been arranged for the occasion. ',;•■''' The Rev. W. ■Banmber will conduct a special "In raemoriam" service in Durham street Church to-morrow night for the late ilr 2s. Martin, who for many years was a member and trustee. The lannual picnic in connection with the Christchurch Meat Company will be heJd at Auiberky next Saturday. A band will be in attendance. The programme consists of races for o'A and young. A general meeting of licensed victuallers will be held on Monday next, at 3 p.m., at Hobbs's Buildings, to consider the report of tihe Special Committee, etc.
The next term of the Boys' and Girla' High Schools will commence on Thursday, February sth. The head master will be at the school on Tuesday, February 3rd, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and the lady principal on Tuesday and Wednesday, February ird and 4th, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The Lyttelton branch of the Scottish Society of New Zealand intend celebrating the birthday of Burns by. a concert in the Oddfellows" Hall, Lyttelton, on the 24th inst. The. practical demonstrations of glassblowing have been well attended during the present week by school children. The exhibitions will be continued every afternoon and evening. A paragraph in Thursday's issue stated that the Timurii eastern extension mols, was now cut 173 feet; it should have read 1750 feet. Experiments have been carried on • for some time for the purpose of utilising our vast assets embodied in waste sands, and it has fallen to the lot of a Canterbury gentleman, in the person of Mr E. J. Parrott, to secure, after much research and expense in England and the Continent, a solution of the problem. Mr Parrott has recently returned with samples of bricks manufactured from Canterbury sand and lime by the most improved modern process and apparatus, fnr which he has obtained protection in New Zealand. A company is in course of formation in Christchurch* to work Mr Parrott's patent, and we have seen samples of the bricks, which from their appearance amp'.y bear out the patentee's contention.
