SOME NOTES ON THE UA-UE.
(SPECIAL TO "TIIE PHESS.") WELLINGTON, January 16.
Tho second day's play in the "cricket match between Wellington and Lord Hawke's team, leaves the game at an interesting stage. The Englishmen state that this in K-ally the only cricket they have had .so far in New Zealand. They are 1 -iiid in their praises of Tucker's play. Hickrfon'.s innings of yesterday they think was a somewhat lucky one, but Tucker pliiyod faultless cricket, and there was a lot of vaikty in hi.s hitting. Warner says Tucker is tiie bfcst bat the team has scon in the colony .so far. Boeanqiiet'.s failure ti> catch Hiekson early in tho game, he fuiy.j, cost the Englishmen 119 run*;. Mr Warner thinks the local wicket a good one, but complains of the roughness of the outfield. Hurgreave, one of the professional bowlers, also praises Tucker's batting, and It tie ai.so a word to say in favour of Marshall, of Wanganui, as a batsman.
Thafc the Wellington team is strong in bowling was proved to-day, for at the Ktart, with v, greasy bull, the chances were all in favour of tha batsman. Some of the fielding was quite brilliant, and Wiiliams's stumping of Burnup was quite a magnificent bit of work. Hargreave says the Wellington wicket is the best the team have play-cd no far in New Zealand, thiough. cth?!s I have , spoken to decide in. favour of the Napier wicket. Hargreave's description of the outfield was brief, but expressive. He said it was "dommed" bad. A deputation from the Canterbury Cricket Association waited on the Mayor, Mr H. F. Wigram, yesterday, to ask him to invite tho citizens to close on Friday, February 6th, instead of the Thursday preceding!, on the occasion of the match with Lord Hawke's team. "Die deputation also wished the Mayor to invite tho citizens to close on Monday afternoon, the last day of the match. The Mayor said that he thought that unless they could guarantee that the match would extend over the third day, which was not possible, they could hardly a.sk the citizens to close. As to> the request to him to invite the citizens to change the half-holiday, he would take time to consider th-e matter, and let the deputation kir.nv. The Lyttelton Methodist Thursday Team played a very enjoyaible game with a team from R.M.S. Delphic on afternoon. The scores were:—Methodists 124 for one wicket (innings declared closed); Delphic 34.
A match, played on Thursday • between the employees of Messrs Beath and Co. and the Fanners' Co-operative Stores, was won by the former on the first innings by 9 runs.
