TRAMWAY ACCIDENT AT SUMNER.

When the tram which left Cathedial square for Sumner arrived at it* main unloading place yesterday, the engine was detached, and ran on to the eastern branch of the line. It was hoped that the loaded carriages would lake the western lead as usual, the operation being known as' *_« flying eh ant," whioh is frequently employed both on iiovesnment railways and tramway lines, though in the former feutaoca there is, or was, a very strict regulation forbidding the manoeuvre. In the Sumner instance of yesterday, the leading carriage, instead, of adhering to tha lies of rails, jumped the point*, and, making for the footpath, collided .heavily with, th* Coronation monument. The structure is question, which a* strongly sad heavily built, undoubtedly saved most serious accidents to life and limb, though in ao doing it suffered considerable damage. T_w heavy top Stone was shifted to the extent of an inch or two, while a deep crack in the foundation remains a. silent but convincing witness of tib& force of the shock. R> is estimated that at least £10 w3l be required fib put. things as they were before. None of the passengers suffered any known injuries, though severe! were considerably shaken, and even more frightened. One lady, Mrs Felton, was .carried into Brooking's Hotel in an apparently weak condition, but she soon recovered. Beyond a few bent couplings, etc., the tram oars did not appear to have sustained much damage
