CYCLING.
A five-mile handicap road race, and the final for the Red Bird Cup, was run at Hatewell on Monday evening. There were thirteen starters. Following was the result:—W. Arps 1, Hearne 2, F. McTaigue 3. Arps has now become winner of the cup. A meeting of the Christchurch Cycling Club's Committee was held on Tuesday. A cable was received from Sydney relating to the visit of Major Taylor, the coloured champion, to New Zealand, and a Sub-Com-mittee was ejected to draft a-nd forward terms for his appearance in the colony. As both W. Martin and G. Sutherland have expressed their willingness to meet each other in a match, it was <fecided to offer a purse of £50, providing that both riders would deposit £25 each, the winner of the match to take the £100. The date of the match was fixed for January 24th, at Lancaster Park, the conditions* to be a mile race unpaoad, a twenty miles race motor-paced, and a five mJ.e motor-paced pursuit race to decide in case of a tie. Seven new members were elected.
