THE SOUTH AFRICAN SERVICE
(SPECIAL TO "THE TRESS.")
DUNEDIN, January 13. , The "Times," in a leader in reiply to Mr Murrell's criticism on its remarks dealing with tJie unsatisfactory condition of tlie South African Steam Service, say«:^—"lt is true that large shipments of batter ure constantly being made from Dunedin to South Africa. These are going- via Australia by the Aberdeen lintr, because regularity in shipment can be depended upon when that line is used. Unfortunately that is not thecase with the so-calle-d <3ir«ct service from Nt'W Zealand." The same journal asks: "What i.« the subsidy paid to the direct service from New Zealand for?" It is paid by tli* people of Otago as much as by those of any other part of the colony. If the manag«"rs of the service ai« to decline to call at a port because the profit they will derive from so doing may be somewhat smaller than their exalted notions would load them to desire, the taxpayers who pay the subsidy have same right to consideration as well as tho company which receives the subsidy."
