♦ An inquest was lield yesterday afternoon at the Ash burton Hospital, before Mr R. Alcorn, J.P., and a jury of six, touching the death of William Thompson, who received a kick from a horse on Friday evening, and died from the effects on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Mr D. 0. Stock was foreman of the jury. The only witness called was Mrs Murray, of Mount Somers, whose evidence pointed to the fact that deceased had been drinking at the Mount Somers Hotel, and left in a trap for the Ashburton Gorge, returning shortly after to the hotel, inhere he continued drinking. The witness saw nothing of the accident which caused Thompson's death. Sergeant Barlow applied for an adjournment for a week, as he intendled to have the letter thorougMy ventilated. This was agreed to, the enquiry to take place at the Ashburton Courthouse on Monday next, at 10 a.m. Mrs FitzGibbon, Wife of Mr ilicliael FitzGibbon, of Lotmrn, died suddenly on Sunday. While driving with her sister on January 6th, and turning a sharp corner, she was thrown violently to the ground, and paralysis of the spine wad caused. On Sunday inflammation took place. An inquest will be held to-day. As a result of a trap collision at Little River yesterday, Mrs J. Foley had two of her ribs broken and a wrist fractured. Miss Barclay was also much, bruised. Whilst cycling to business yesterday, Mr W. Martin, Ckrk of the Magistrate's Court, was run into by another cyclist on the Fendalton Road, and was thrown from his machine. The bones of his right hand were broken, and it will be some time before he will be able to resume business. The cyclist responsible for the accident was attempting to pass on his wrong side. Whilst at work on Saturday afternoon, a tailoress in the empftoy of Messrs Ballantyne at Timaru, was struck 'by a flash ot lightning, which paralysed her right arm, and smashed the window of the ?oom in which she was working. WANGANUI, January 12. On Sunday last, while engaged pig hunting near Brunswick, a young man named Redmond Cripps, aged 22, was accidentally killed by the gun, exploding. At the inquest to-day a verdict of aocidentad death was returned. BLENHEIM, January 12. A young man named William Rutter, hailing from Victoria, and working on the Top Valley goldrield, died in the hospital us the result of a peculiar accident. Last Thursday, while vaulting, and about nine feet from the ground the pole broke, and he fell heavily on his shoulder, the whole of his body becoming paralysed.
