♦■ The Drainage Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs R. Pitcaithly (chairman), R. M. Taylor, W. E. Samuels, (J. Burgess, P. CampbeU, G. M'lntyre, H. J. Otiey, and Dr. tVloorhouse. The secretary reported that rates received amounted to J32474 10s lid, from othsr sources £178 10s 6d; total, £2653 Is sd. Expenditure—Rate account £697 Is 9d, loan account £17 4s sd. Engineer repurted tlliat with regard to the. disposal of sewage at the larm, the ontr suggestion he, could think of wa-s to shift the- settling pond to somewhere about the former site, although tilus would not materi-aily affect the question as regarded its proximity to houses. To apply the sewage direct to the land, without passing it through a pond, would tend to render the paaJocks "sick," but this might be overcome by me preparation of a considerably larger area of land for treatment, say, twenty acres. After the trees which have beai planted round the settling ponds had grown (somewhat, it would twid to kssen the smell. Mr Lawrence had not taken furiiher notice- of the Board's request that he should name a price land proposed to be taken in R.S. 8103. Mr MTntyre said something would have to toe done to make decided alterations in ihe system, and the Board should be in possession of information generally on the question. It would cost about £2000 to prepare fourteen acres, but. a larger area would probably be required when ail the connections with Ului sewers were made. He moved that the Engineer submit an estimate of an efficient septic tank system. . Mr Taylor seconded the motion, winch wus eupported by the Chaiiaian -and Mr Samuels, and agreed to. With regard to Mr Lawrence"s land, the matter waa left ior the secretary to deal with. The tepoit as a whole was adopted. The manager of the Christchurch brinch of the Bank of New Zealand wrote intimating that the balance of the Botrd's investment account had been utilised in the purchase of £540 15s Id New Zealand 4 per cent, stock, and that the manager and accountant, for the time being, of the branch, would act as a,g*;nUs for the Board. It was decided to appoint the manager and accountant th« Bourd's agents. Messrs Slater and Son wrote stilting that the agents of the Charkswortk estate, reported the flooding of portions of the estate owing to breaches in the wall protecting the Canal Reserve by water conveyed by the city drain. The Engineer reported having vkited the spot, and said that the flooding wae caused by tidal water. It was decided to take legal opinion as to the Board's responsibility in the matter. The Board resolved to accept the Linvrooj Council's application for £2000 worth of the Board"s sinking funds at 4J per cent. Rev. Father Marnane wrote re the creek running through the church and presbytery grouiuk of St. Mary's, Manchester street stating that it was a source oi dtiDgex to the children attending tha school, come of whom hid l.een fcur. t , * falling in.
