THE TRAMWAYS BOARD.

gaeh

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBKSS.

Sir,—As a T_am__ian, I beg to take exoepticu to Mr ii. L. Scott's remarks at a deputation to Mr G. G, Stead re Hobart trams. The system waa at that time (about eleven yean, ago) the bast (obtainable, and Mr ftoott fcppwa perfectly yyjjl t& tteidcy tfcffa

When constructed, they were co-iidered to be the best in the colonies. I believe the Hobart folks are now experimenting with a new oar, and no doubt wiU still keep tea year* ahead of C_r_tdhtirch. Take Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney was, six years ago, as bad as, if not worse, than your own. but now has ss good *s you could wish for. Melbourne has also lately replaced with up-to-date care. I suppose Mr Scott will admit that Hobart trams are a trifle better than the Sumner Line, far they travel at twice the Hpeed, have no smell, and can negotiate a hill, whereas I saw the Sumner ti.--.__ unable to get over the Heathoote brddge with thrre cars the other day.

If Tasmanians want a thing they get it, without, talking about it for three or four yeans, getting an expert's advice, and the very best terms he can give, and then letting h_m pass by. Lately they found they required electric lighting, and without sending to Italy offering a man £2000 of public money to show them how to do it, and then not getting him, they found men at their own door, and so they have a first-class plant in both Hoba:& and Launceston, whUe Christchuroh talks and ignores its own City Surveyor.— Yours, etc., ALFRED J. HAROOURT. St. Albans, Januajy 10th," 1903.
