The Navy League decorated Nelson's column in Trafalgar square. THE CHANNEL FLEET. The Channel fleet has arrived at Villagarcia, in Northern Spain. A. P. C. CALVERT'S ESTATE. In connection witH the estate of A. F. Calvert, a West Australian mining sDeculator, against whom a receiving order was made, and who subsequently offered to assign half of his income to liquidate the claims,of a large number of it is now stated that Calvert is unable to pay more than 3s 9d in the £ cash, and the estate has been thrown into bankruptcy, and a trustee and committee of management were appointed. CASHING VALUELESS CHEQUES. The Hon. Philip Benedict Joseph Petre, a brother and heir presumptive of Baron Petre, has been sentenced to six months , imprisonment for cashing worthless cheques. ILL-TREATMENT OF CHILDREN. The Rev. Gowan, vicar of Runton, in Norfolk, and his wife, have each been sentenced to four months' imprisonment for ill-treating their orphan nieces. ROUGEMONT'S STORIES. Sir George Newness advertisements in reference to Rougemont's stories, now appearing in the "Wide World Journal," admits that Rougemont is Grien, and says that if he is not speaking the truth he is a master of fiction unequalled since Defoe. The members of the Cabinet persistently resisted public petitions in favour of establishing a Parliament. A MOUNTAIN CLIMBER'S ACHIEVEMENT..-.. ■■ ■ LONDON, October 22. Sir William Conway, the well-known Alpine climber, climbed Mount Sorata, in the Andes, and readied an altitude of 24,000 ft. His further progress was barred by an imnassable crevasse. (Sir William M. Conway climbed a peak 23,000 ft high, in the Himalayas in 1892, and surveyed 2000 miles of mountains; he traversed the Alps from end to end in 1894, and explored the interior of Spitsbergen in 1896-97. In his latest achievement he has scaled one of the loftiest peaks of the Andes). IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT. The Imperial Parliament has been prorogued till December Bth.
