LONDON, October 22. Sir Henry Barkly, ex-colonial Governor, is dead, aged 83 years.

Sir Henry Barkly vras born in London in 1815, and was the son of a West India merchant in that city. Hβ was educated at Bruce Castle School, Tottenham, and went into business. From 1845 to 1849 he was M.P. for Leominster as a supporter of Sir Robert Peel. In December, 1848, he was appointed Governor Cammander-in-Chief of British Guiana. He was Governor of Jamaica from 1855 to 1856, and in the latter year was created X.C.8., and appointed Governor of Victoria* He became Governor of Mauritius in 1863, and was Governor and High Commissioner at the Cape from 1870 to 1877, when he retired on a pension- He was created G.C.M.G. in 1874T
