Richard Durnford, D.D., Bishop of Chichester, was born at Sandleford, Berkshire, in 1802. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and was elected successively a Demy and a Fellow of Magdalen Colloge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1826 and M.A. in 1829. He was consecrated Bishop of Chichester in 1870.] GOVERNOR OF JAMAICA. October 15. Sir F. N. Broome has been appointed Governor of Jamaica. THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE. Mr McKenzie, who was sent out to Africa by the Anti-Slavery Society, as a special Commissioner to investigate the condition of the slaves, after making prolonged inquiries, reports that 2400 lives are sacrificed every year in order to supply the local demand in Zanzibar and Penlba, and 40,000 in-_he Arabian Coast trade. MR GLADSTONE. Mr Gladstone is suffering from a chill. FATAL COLLISION AT SEA. The German steamer Emma sank the French barque Pacific in the North Sea.. THE REVOLT IN COREA. Shanghai, October 14. The revolt continues in Corea. i Owing to the gravity of the situation a number of marines from the United States warships were landed and marched to Seoul to protect property. A force of English Marines also has landed at Chemulpo. THE AMERICAN CURRENCY. New York, October 14. Mr J. G. Carlisle, Secretary of the Treasury, speaking at Boston, declared that it was imperative to retire greenbacks as soon as a safe currency was found.
