THE RAIL STRIKE AND WHAKATANE

EFFECT NOT SERIOUS YESTERDAY

Auckland’s rail strike had had little effect in Whakatane yesterday except to create suspense in the minds of those who wondered how it would affect their holidays if if continued.

Buses were running no further than Hamilton, where passengers were left to their own devices. It was those who intended to travel north from Frankton who expected trouble. Mail services have not been affected. Outward mails passed their peak yesterday, when the Post Office was able to make adequate arrangements for fast delivery to Auckland. Inward mails were at their heaviest but it was understood that arrangements were complete for deliveries from the north. A chief worry concerns the delivery of foodstuffs expected by rail at Whakatane West but the town’s stdcks appear to be adequate. A bigger worry might yet be the non-delivery of beer. One merchapt is said to be running short.
