Sixteen Permits In The County
Sixteen building permits, of a value of £11,900, had been issued, reported inspector R. D. Stirling to the Whakatane County Council on Monday. He commented on the building of sub-standard residences in what was becoming a permanent residential area at Ohope. His report read: —
Infectious Diseases: One case of Bacillary dysentry was notified during the period, a child aged three years.
Plumbing and Drainage: A total of ten inspections were carried out, this includes three re-inspections for defective drainage work. Habitations: ’Two were inspected, one of which had previously been reported upon during its construction as not complying with the bylaws. The County Clerk was present during this inspection and he contacted the responsible authority, and since that date the tenants of this dwelling'have been moved to a more suitable dwelling. Fire Inspections: Control was effected over a small fire near Taneatua by requesting Council employees nearby to keep an eye on this fire till it had burned out.
A warning notice re fires at Ohope beach has been forwarded to the local press. General Inspections: Four were carried out, this included the inspection of two motor camps at Ohope. Interviews: Sixteen interviews have taken place during the period. Notices: One notice was served on a hawker operating without a licence at Minginui Village. It may be thought that to issue the necessary licence after collecting the fee would be sufficient in these instances. It is pointed out however, that this type of offence is very difficutu to detect, especially in areas like Minginui. Building Inspections: A total of nine inspections have been made With one exception, the work was being carried out in a satisfactory manner. Permits have been issued for the erection of the following: Dwellings 4, £5,435; additions to dwellings 2, £950; petrol tanks 3, £3,115; hay barns 6, £2,370; pump house 1, 30;. Total £11,900. Building inspection fees £46 10s. An application has been made by a person who wishes to erect at Ohope a garage, which it is his intention to use as a 'bach. The fact that Ohope is now becoming a township and not a weekend holiday resort brings up a point that if the building of baches for intermittent use is permitted, then we shall in the future have these sub-standard dwellings in the midst of a permanent residential area with the consequential difficulties in the future.
