Thornton

Mrs Branch presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute. A children’s Christmas party was held. Santa Claus arrived, and, from a Christmas tree, gave each child a present. A special feature of the afternoon was gifts received from Craigellachie, the Scottish link. Each member received a gift mostly of tartan design, and tied up with strings of heather. A musical parcel for the children was arranged by Mrs Branch. Competition results were:— Best bloom, Miss B. Law 1, Mrs D. Branch 2; best vegetable, Mrs B. Smith 1, Mrs Sheat 2; Christmas cake, Mrs T. Mexted 1, Mrs Jones 2; Christmas present, Mrs Tooke 1, Mrs Branch 2; three gladiolus, Mrs Mexted 1, Mrs Branch 2.
