Fire on the eastern boundary of the Kaingaroa forest broke out. One hundred men with pumps and five tankers were on the scene within half an hour.
The fire crossed the Rangitaiki on the eastern side and was burning slowly as darkness fell, but there was no risk then of its spreading.
