Future Of The Atom Bomb
In spite of the reaction to the suggestion that the atom bomb be used in Korfea, it is probable that this weapon is destined to take its place with all the other weapons that have been thought up for use in war over a period of three or four thousand years. When the bow and arrow replaced the spear one can well imagine that people of those days thought that nothing more effective or more terrible could be devised. The arrow, in fact, was about as shattering as the atom bomb is to use. It could pierce all but the toughest armour. It could kill a man at several hundred yards, it was cheap, and it required no propelling ammunition. The back-room boys who gave the world the bow and arrow sat back for thousands of years in happy certainty that the ultimate weapon had been devised. It will be recalled that the Maori never knew about the bow and arrow and would have fallen to any foe so armed.
