DRUNK IN CHARGE; LOSES HIS LICENCE
Found intoxicated in charge of a Government vehicle, a Ministry of Works overseer lost his licence in the Whakatane Court on Friday. Ronald Edgar Wassell, overseer, was charged that on Thursday he drove a Government truck on the Whakatane-Rotorua highway while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty. Messrs L. Brown and H. G. Warren, J. P’s, were on the bench. At 11.15 p.m., said Senior-Ser-geant Fuller, Traffic Inspector Bridge had found accused asleep in his truck near Awakeri Hot Springs. He had brought Wassell into town and a doctor had certified him ‘unfit to drive. Accused had been working > but had met a friend. He had drunk whisky and beer mixed. Finding it was having an effect on him, he had stopped driving. Wassell was a Ministry of Works overseer. Wassell said the loss of his licence would mean the loss of his livelihood. He was convicted, fined £lO and all costs, and his driving licence was cancelled for 12 months.
