MAYOR WILL ADDRESS MEETING OF CITIZENS
When he has had time to settle into office, the Mayor, Mr S. S Shapley, will attend a meeting of the' Whakatane Citizens’ Association and discuss Borough affairs, it was announced at the association’s annual meeting on Tuesday night. The president, Mr L. C. Richards, presided over an attendance of about 20. The president announced that he had had a discussion with Mr Shapley, who had stated that he was prepared in a few months’ time after he had a full grip of Borough affairs to attend a meeting of the Citizens’ Association and discuss the affairs of the Borough. Congratulations were extended to Mrs W. L. Petty upon her election to the Hospital Board The president announced that he did not seek re-election but he was pressed to reconsider his decision. The following office bearers'were elected:— President, Mr L. C. Richards; vice-president, Mr R. Vail; committee, Mr P.Sharman, Mrs Cockerell, Mr A. J. Atkinson, Mrs W. L. Petty, Mr B. .Kemp, Mr A. White and Mr Gilgreen; secretary, Mr G. Washer, Jnr; representative on the War Memorial Committtee, Mr B. Kemp. A lengthy discussion took place on the question of the civilian allocation of State houses and several apparent inconveniences were mentioned. It was decided to request the Minister of Housing to set up a local allocation committee for Whakatane.
