WHAKATANE WINS AT SHOW IN TAURANGA
takes major awards FOR GLADIOLI Major awards at the Tauranga Gladiolus Show on Wednesday were won by Whakatane Gladiolus Society entrants, Mr and Mrs Farn worth and W. E. Stringer. Although Whakatane blooms were without water for three to four hours, they caused something of a sensation. Mr and Mrs Farnworth won the Dominion Gladiolus Federation’s Home Achievement Award, for the champion bloom of the show, with a spike of Grand Monarch. This spike also won the open championship. In all Mr and Mrs Farnworth were only defeated for first prize once, when they were second to the amateur champion, winning five firsts and one Second, with six entries. Mr Stringer exhibited in the seedling section, and, in the three classes, he was second in the first, first and second in the second and first in the third. His best spike was rather badly damaged on the way over and this spoiled his chance of winning all classes and the seedling championship. Other members went over to' see the show but did not exhibit.
