Captain E. G. K. Meatyard, former master of the Tamahine, and Mr H. Wareing,. relieving chief of the Matua, will fly to England in January to sail the Union Steam Ship Company’s new 5170-ton intercolonial freighter Waimate on her delivery voyage to New Zealand. The Waimate, at present being built at the shipyards . of Henry Robb, Limited, Leith, will be launched late in January, and sail for New Zealand in May. A singlescrew motor vessel, she is a sister ship to the company’s Kawaroa, which arrived in New Zealand on her maiden voyage from the United Kingdom last month. Four more ships are being built for the company,-two of them, the Karoon and the Kootara, for the Australian coastal trade. The other two are the Tofua, a passengercargo liner for the Auckland-Islands trade, and the Kokiri, a freighter for the West Coast coal trade. The Kawatiri, another sister ship to the Waimate, is at present on her maiden voyage to New Zealand. The Waimate was formerly called the Kurutai, but was re-named by the company while she was being built. She has a service speed of 12 knots and a cargo capacity of 5300 tons, dead weight. Captain Meatyard and Mr Wareing will supercise the fitting out and engining of the ship after she is launched.
