HARBOUR BOARD REVIEWS ITS PAST YEAR
A credit of £6,306 iss Id is shown in the Whakatane Harbour Board’s accounts for the year ended September 30. This comes from £2,265 8s 3d in the endowment account and £4,041 6s lOd in the harbour fund.
Receipts were £21,857 and payments £21,261. Public debt, at £36,186, shows a reduction of £15,096. Annual debt charges will be £4,010 14s. The present public debt will be completely repaid by 1962. These facts were reported by the chairman, Mr W. R. Boon, at the annual meeting of the board on Friday.
He reported that special legislation had amended the harbour boundary at Ohiwa. Lands acquired were four sections in the Witchell estate, one section from Mr Campbell, McAlister Street and one from Maori owners at the Heads. The Strand extension scheme had been approved by the Borough Council. Two sections in Commerce Street had been offered for lease but there had been no tenders. Fifteen sections would be offered in the Strand extension. Little headway had been made in the matter of buildings being erected on the three Strand extension sections which had ' been leased for several years.
A proposed new river bridge at Whakatane had been discussed with the authorities.
