Parent-Teachers Meet And Hear Varied Talks
A meeting of the Whakatane Par-ent-Teacher Association was held in the school on Wednesday. Mr Fryer-Raisher presided over an attendance of about 40 parents and teachers. Mr R. S. Buttimore, accountant of the Whakatane Post Office Savings Bank, gave a short address on the School Saving Bank system and stressed the importance of saving small weekly sums in building character and good habits for the child as well as building up capital for use in the future. The Postmaster, Mr G. A. Wilkes, spoke briefly on the Savings Bank system in general and also upon the Post Office staff welfare scheme. Both speakers answered questions and were thanked for their attendance. Miss Syverston, of the teaching staff, gave a talk on the school sewing syllabus and explained what the system sought to attain. She traced the development of sewing skill and tendencies from the tiny tots through to the older pupils, some of whom showed remarkable aptitude even making smart frocks for themselves or for their sisters. The secretary, Mr A. D. O’Rourke, undertook to convene a group of parents who would provide the afternoon tea for the forthcoming fair. The chairman announced that from the proceeds of the fair it would be possible to completely renovate the two school pianos and perhaps purchase one or more sewing machines, for the use of the sewing classes.
It was agreed to purchase an electric urn for use at the school.
