WAIOHOU TO HAVE A TAXI

Waiohou is to have a taxi, decided the No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr V. C. Flore, in Whakatane on Wednesday. He granted the application to U. K. Danghi. Danghi said he had a store and taxi licence at Murupara. He had a store at Waiohou, the nearest taxis to which were at Te Teko and Murupara. About 300 people lived in the district. He had been doing Waiohou taxiing from Murupara—at least one trip a week. He had another taxi at Te Whaiti.

James Loane, of Tunnicliffe’s Mill and J. Ranui, president of the tribal committee, gave supporting evidence.

It appeared, said the authority, that there was a case for a licence but the applicant already had two licences. He did not want to build up a combine. On being assured that Danghi would give up the licence if required at any time for full time use by an ex-serviceman, it was granted. There was no appearance of E. L. Rossiter, who applied for a taxi licence for Murupara, and the application was struck out. It was opposed by other operators.
