Edgecumbe Scouts Celebrate Birthday
Edgecumbe Scouts held their annual display and celebrated the fifth birthday of the troop on Tuesday. There was a good attendance of parents and friends. The chairman of the committee, Mr H. Andersen, introduced County Commissioner, C. Kingsley-Smith, who gave a talk on the origins of the movement. Scoutmaster M. Law, assisted by R. Ford, put the boys through various phases of their work in display of knot tying and axemanship. This was followed by the investiture of three tenderfoots, Willie Summerell, Billie Gibson and John Hunter, by the Commissioner. He also presented Bruce and Viv Plank with five-year service stars. As an interlude musical items were given by Messrs Crooks and Kerr as a harmonic duo. and Mr Crooks in a solo. Mrs Law Snr. then lit the candles on the birthday cake. Mrs Martin, who made the cake, cut it and supper was served by the boys.
