FUN FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES

Whakatane people of all ages celebrated Guy Fawkes Day in traditional manner on Saturday night. Big bonfires at McGarvey’s Road and Ohope attracted hundreds and there was much letting off of fireworks on a smaller scale in all parts of the town. At least 1200 people attended Luke’s fireworks display at the end of McGarvey’s Road. The 50-foot bonfire was lit just before nine, and when it had died down the organised display of fireworks began. Brilliant rockets and spinning Catherine wheels were an irrisistible attraction to young and old.

The public response was excellent and £77, almost double last yearns funds, was collected, and will all be used to purchase fireworks for next year’s event. Before the lighting- of the fire, Mr Hans Haeusler entertained with his popular sketches and Mr McWilliams, of Auckland, with Miss Y. McNaughton at the piano, led a community sing.

Ohope and some Whakatane residents had a big bonfire on the beach. It was lit to the accompaniment of much noise and fireworks display. A collection taken up for next year’s funds was well supported A dance at the Captain’s Cabin followed. • I
