TWO PRISONERS ESCAPE BUT QUICKLY ARRESTED; STOLEN VEHICLES RECOVERED

Two prisoners escaped from the Whakatane lock-up on Wednesday night and, yesterday morning, two motor vehicles were reported as having been stolen. The youths were caught at Mount Maunganui yesterday morning and both vehicles were recovered.

The escaped prisoners are both 18-year-old Maoris, Wiki Momomoko junior, vulcaniser, who was on remand on a theft, charge, and Alfred Thompson, a garage attendant, who was serving a sentence for truck and car conversion. Both are local youths. At about 11 o’clock on Wednesday night, a half-ton Ford truck, licence number L 4312, painted cream and grey, the property of Mr S. A. Mahy, valued at £6OO, was stolen from Awakeri. A Chevrolet coupe car, licence number 51667, painted fawn, valued at £6OO, the property of Mr Hume of Commerce Sti'eet, disappeared from outside the Masonic Hall in Louvain Street between 7.30 p.m. and midnight.

The absence of the prisoners was discovered when the lock-up was opened yesterday morning.
